About UPSC Exam

 The Union Public Service Commission (Hindi: संघ लोक सेवा आयोग, IAST: Saņgh Lok Sevā Āyōg), commonly abbreviated as UPSC, is India's premier central recruiting agency.

It is responsible for examinations and appointments for All India services and group A & group B of Central services. The agency's charter is granted by Part XIV(14) of the Constitution of India, titled as Services Under the Union and the States.

It is powered by the Constitution for appointments to the services of the Union and All India Services. The commission reports directly to the President and can advise the Government through him.

Established on :1 October 1926 as Public Service Commission, it was referred to as Federal Public Service Commission by the Government of India Act, 1935.

The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a national-level competitive examination in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) for recruitment to various Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), an Indian Police Service (IPS). It is simply referred to as the UPSC examination.

It is conducted in three phases - a preliminary examination( also called pre) consisting of two objective-type papers (General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper-II also popularly known as Civil Service Aptitude Test or CSAT), and a main examination consisting of nine papers of subjective type, in which two papers are qualifying and only marks of seven are counted followed by a personality test (interview).
It is considered to be one of the most difficult competitive examinations in India. On average, 900,000(9 lakh) to 1,000,000(10 lakh) candidates apply every year and the number of candidates sitting in the preliminary examination is approximately 500,000.
Results for the Prelims are published in mid-August, while the final result is published in May of the next year.

Eligibility:
  • Nationality:
  • ↦ For IAS & IPS, the candidate must be an INDIAN citizen.
    ↦But for other services A citizen of Nepal or a subject of Bhutan, Tibetan refugee who settled permanently in India before January 1, 1962. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  • Educational Qualification:
  • ↦ A degree from a Central, State, or a Deemed university through correspondence or distance education or from an open university, degree from any foreign university recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.
    ↦ The following candidates are also eligible but must submit proof of their eligibility from a competent authority at their institute/university at the time of the main examination, failing which they will not be allowed to attend the exam.
    ↦ Candidates who are in the final year of their bachelor's degree.
    ↦ Candidates who are in their final year & have passed the final exam of the MBBS degree but have not yet completed an internship.
    ↦Candidates who have passed the final exam of ICAI, ICSI, and ICWAI.

forward you appear for anyone one paper also of preliminary then it will be counted as an attempt.
But if you failed to sit in the examination, then it will not be counted as an attempt.

Stage 1:- Preliminary
↦ From 2011 onwards, the preliminary examination, now popularly known as the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) (officially it is still called General Studies Paper-1 and Paper-2), intends to focus on analytical abilities and understanding rather than the ability to memorize.
↦ The new pattern includes two papers of two hours duration and 200 marks each. Both papers have multiple choice objective-type questions only.
They are as follows:
↦ Paper I tests the candidate's knowledge on current events, history of India and Indian national movement, Indian and world geography, Indian polity Panchayati Raj system and governance, economic and social development, environmental ecology, biodiversity, climate change, and general science, Art, and culture.
Paper-II tests the candidate's skills in comprehension, interpersonal skills, communication, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision making, problem-solving, basic numeracy, data interpretation, English language comprehension skills, and mental ability. It is qualifying in nature and the marks obtained in this paper are not counted for merit.
↦In May 2015, the Government of India announced that Paper-II of the preliminary examination will be qualifying in nature. (i.e candidates need to score only 33% so that their CSAT paper can be evaluated and only marks of paper I will be required to be eligible for mains).
Those who qualify in the Prelims become eligible for the Mains.
Stage 2:- Mains
The Civil Services Mains Examination consists of 9 papers out of which papers A & Paper B are only qualifying papers. Paper A is one of the languages in the 8th schedule & Paper B is English(Compulsory).

↦Public administration is one of the most preferred optional subjects as it has overlapping content with other subjects like Current Affairs, History, Polity.
↦ The standards of Optional papers are of graduation level. Paper 1 is theoretical but Paper 2 is often dominated by Current Affairs and Application-based questions.
Stage 3:- Interview
Officially called the " Personality Test ", the objective of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service.
The interview is not a test of knowledge as it has already been tested through various phases of examination, it is rather a test of attitude, biases, personality, and presence of mind.
